Venue Information

Cox Science Center and Aquarium

The Cox Science Center and Aquarium began as the South Florida Science Museum, opening on October 21, 1961 to foster exploration in natural science and history. It saw a significant expansion in 1964 with the addition of a planetarium, initially dedicated to astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Over the years, it evolved, reflecting its growing educational scope and community engagement. Renovations in 2008 notably upgraded the planetarium and theater, enhancing the facility's educational offerings.
The planetarium at the Cox Science Center holds a special place, both historically and functionally. Initially dedicated by astronaut Buzz Aldrin, it has been a cornerstone for astronomical education within the facility. The 2008 renovation significantly enhanced the planetarium, contributing to a richer educational experience for visitors. Alongside the planetarium, the center houses a variety of hands-on exhibits, a 3,000 square foot aquarium, and space for temporary traveling exhibits.

The Cox Science Center and Aquarium offers a variety of educational and interactive exhibits, including the “Aquariums of the Atlantic” gallery and the globally recognized “Journey Through the Human Brain” exhibit. Outdoor venues comprise a conservation-themed Mini-Golf Course and a quarter-mile-long science trail. With a significant donation from Howard and Wendy Cox, the center announced expansion plans to further enhance its exhibit and programming spaces, aiming to broaden local STEM impact initiatives through this transformation.
