James Hood
The Immersive Pioneer
James Hood is the visionary creator behind the world’s most beloved immersive dome experiences: Mesmerica and Beautifica. Now, Astronomica, the final chapter of this incredible trilogy, is finally here.
Known for his groundbreaking multi-sensory projects that blend music and art, James Hood has an extensive musical résumé, which includes drumming for The Pretenders, acting as the creative force behind the visionary ambient act Moodswings, and a wide array of soundtrack projects.
With Astronomica, James invites us to embark on the final chapter of an audio-visual odyssey. While Mesmerica offered a reflection of calm and Beautifica celebrated life, Astronomica takes you on a cosmic journey designed to inspire hope, love, and awe.
Venue Information
Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium
For nearly 50 years, the Horwitz-DeRemer Planetarium, located in the Retzer Nature Center which is part of the Waukesha County Parks System, has inspired curiosity and wonder as a valuable educational and community resource for the School District of Waukesha and southeastern Wisconsin, sharing the latest in astronomy, space exploration, and science education.
Each year, the planetarium presents over 650 immersive shows to more than 31,000 visitors of all ages. The facility features a 40-foot domed theater equipped with 94 seats, a Digistar 6 digital projection system, and a hearing loop system with AV and FM hearing assistance. To make programming accessible to all, the planetarium offers Spanish-language shows and captioning in both English and Spanish.
Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and explore the Purple Planetary Pathway, located onsite on the existing purple trail. This outdoor walking trail is a **scale model of our solar system—both in size and distance—**providing a hands-on way to experience the vastness of space before heading into the dome.
Guests are also invited to explore the interactive science exhibits and enjoy the renovated lobby, which provides ample seating and tables ideal for small group activities, social gatherings, celebrations, and learning opportunities.
